April Cafe Link between Hearing and Balance
Dr Jaika S Witana Consultant Audiovestibular Physician Lead Clinician, Honorary Senior Lecturer Medical School, University of Sheffield Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust The hypothesis unifies the intricate sense of hearing with that of “balance” / movement sense. Anatomically the sense of hearing arises from the cochlear and the “balance” sense arises from the vestibular system. There are anatomical, physiological - sensory-neural correlates which could be explained by studying the evolution of the Audiovestibular System and the embryological development of this most sensitive end-organ. The pathophysiology of unusual clinical presentations could be explained by the hypothesis and the hypothesis could lead to formulate future research and lead to discoveries.
