| The alcohol industry is dominated by powerful transnational corporations
each representing several hundred alcohol brands such as InBev
(over 200 beer brands, e.g. Stella, Budweiser, Beck’s), Diageo
(e. g. Guiness, Smirnoff, Johnnie Walker, Blossom Hill, Baileys, Captain
Morgan, Pimm’s, Talisker, Oban, Lagavulin) or the Fosters Group (e.g.
Fosters, Carlsberg, Kronenbourg, Corona, Carlton, Bulmers, Strongbow,
Wolf Bass).
The UK Government recently invited alcohol and food industry
representatives to actively participate in the development of health
policy.
In this Café Scientifique talk, Professor Petra Meier will look
at a question asked in the Guardian (12th Nov): Do Andrew Lansley's
“responsibility deals” mean drinks firms' dream of writing public health
policy has finally come true? Or can and should the alcohol industry be
partners in public health policy making, by educating consumers and
promoting healthy drinking practices? ?
Over a nice glass of wine, this
talk will examine whether previous attempts at voluntary and
self-regulatory solutions were successful in reducing harm, and what we
know about the effectiveness of alcohol policies that are currently
favoured by industry stakeholders.+
